In my experience of making cases analogous to yours, (i.e. say in proposing a new
art program to an author or editor, or a whole new project to a publisher; or even
with grant proposals) there is nothing like first-hand info to substantiate need.
Why not poll some scientists and ask them to write a note to you on the subject,
with permission to quote? You might be surprised how far such remarks can take a
project. Just a thought.
