I have a copy of an article somewhere that laments the loss of art training
for geologists. Some field sketching was absolutely necessary before
photographic records became common. The author claims, justifiably, I think,
that reliance on photography can make geologists lazy observers. To sketch
formations forces you to see them more clearly. I will try to pin down this
