I have heard of some people having problems with upgrading, but no specific bugs reported. I am using 8.61 on my machine at work with Illustrator 9.0. 9.0 still has some bug issues to work out, but that transparency stuff is really cool! You might consider looking for a copy of 8.5 now (about $70 on ebay). The upgrade to 8.6 is free from the Apple web site if you have that. Maybe save the Major OS upgrade to 9 or X for a slow time. I occasionally have my monitor refuse to wake up as well, but not from the monitor button being shut off. Probably something happened in the energy saver control panel software while you had the monitor turned off, that is why a restart solves the problem.
