Yes, these are deer mice. I caught one inside the car.
Yikes. Yes, I don't want them dying in the car, not in Arizona!!!
Used kitty litter. hmmmmm. I have some friends who have kitties. I
wonder if the dogs would get into it??? Probably think it's a granola
snack.
Worth trying if I could put screen wire over it. I wonder if the
pungent nature of old kitty litter would work it's way into the
car???I'd have to be careful and close all the vents, eh?

I've had deer mice get into my Honda CRV twice, while it was parked in
the garage. The first time, all of the sudden I heard a loud whirring
sound from the air conditioner blower, so I took it into the repair
shop, thinking the AC or heater was broken. The mechanic said "mice" -
which I thought was some esoteric auto repair term. Nope, it meant that
little, now dead mice, were in the AC blower. Not a real simple task to
get the blower out, either.
The next time I was on my way on a Sunday, to Bozeman for the AMI and
Guild meetings, during that summer's heat wave. First hour went OK, but
as I got to the top of Lost Trail Pass, I guess my riders had made it
from wherever they were in the engine to what they thought was the
safety of the AC blower. Hearing the same whirr again, I knew I was in
for a real pleasure trip for the next 4 hours. And that part of Montana
has few inhabitants, not to mention car repair shops open on Sunday.
With the temperature at 110 degrees, those little guys got smelly fast.
When I got to the hotel and met my husband, it took my him some time to
get the blower out, not having quite the right screwdriver - and my car
had a distinctive pong for a while.
Maybe used kitty litter on the ground would be a deterrent -

I park the car in a carport, with open sides, can't quite close it off
from the world...

Hi Everyone:
Here's a TANGENT for a chuckle.
Does anyone have an idea what one could put under the car that would
deter mice from getting in the engine, and thus having a party inside
of the car? They could qualify for frequent traveler miles.
A friend came up with a tray of mothballs, another mentioned essence of
rat snake or weasel, but I don't know where that darned weasel has gone
to; probably on a winter's vac with the rat snake.
I'm stumped, so is Toyota....
So, thought I'd toss it out to you resourceful gems.
