I think every scientist must have different criteria for deciding who will be listed as a co-author. I have been offered to be listed as co-author in return for creating an illustration for the paper. (I declined to do the illustration, since a co-authorship isn&#39;t going to pay the bills). I suspect that this was the scientist&#39;s way of dealing with inadequate funding, and I don&#39;t blame him one bit for using the authorship as a form of payment, if that&#39;s what it takes.<br clear="all">
