Greetings, GNSI!
More news comes with December. Enjoy!

      WORKSHOPS

*Dulce Nascimento`s 2013 15th/16th/17th and Scientific illustration
trips in the Amazon*
<http://www.gnsi.org/event/field-trip/scientific-illustration-trips-amazon-2013>
Three trips available: May 16th to 26th - May 29 to June 8th - June
10th to 20th, 2013

The great success of the scientific illustration trips was the incentive
for Dulce to do them in 2013, not just one but three 11 days & 10 nights
trips - the first from May 16th to May 26th, the second from May 29th to
June 8th, and the third from June 10th to 20th, 2013.

Explore the Amazonian environment, observe it in close proximity, and
learn to draw and paint (in watercolors) the landscape, and the
terrestrial and aquatic vegetation. These are trips programmed with
scientific illustrator Dulce Nascimento - who graduated from the School
of Fine Arts of Rio de Janeiro, and studied at the Royal Botanic
Gardens, Kew, as a scholar of the Margaret Mee Foundation...

      BOOK REVIEW

*Images of Nature: The Art of the First Fleet
<http://www.gnsi.org/resources/reviews/images-nature-art-first-fleet>*

1787 "Two Naval Ships, the HMS Sirius and HMS Supply, three store ships
and six convict transports set sail from Portsmouth bound for Botany
Bay," 'the First Fleet' as defined by colonial Australian historians.
The brief but poignant introduction by Lisa Di Tommaso, the assistant
Librarian of the Natural History Museum in London, sets the stage for a
series of images that portray the earliest encounters between European
commerce and Australian aboriginal natives...

      BLOGS

*GNSI Member Marjorie Leggitt given ASBA Award of Excellence
<http://www.gnsi.org/blog/gnsi-member-marjorie-leggitt-given-asba-award-excellence>*
The ASBA (American Society of Botanical Illustrators) recognizes artists
who have made significant contributions to science through botanical
art. These artist's work must meet the requirements of scientific
accuracy, technical proficiency, and aesthetics. In addition, the artist
must have compiled a body of work that shows significant accomplishment
in the field of scientific illustration. The recipient of this year's
biennial award, "ASBA Botanical Illustrator Award for Excellence in
Scientific Botanical Art", is our very own Marjorie Leggitt, Treasurer
of the GNSI....

*Award Winning Birds <http://www.gnsi.org/blog/award-winning-birds>*
GNSI members have many interests - and connections for the expression of
their art. It isn't all nematodes and insect setae! So congratulations
to GNSI member Linda Feltner for both a people's choice award at the
GNSI Members Exhibit this past summer and now two new awards for the
same image! Linda has received "The Ethology Award for the Best
Depiction of Natural Behavior in Any Medium", and also the "Western Art
Collector's Magazine Editor's Choice Award", both for "A Mischief of
Jays", and both are given by the Society of Animal Artists (SAA).

      CHAPTERS & GROUPS

*Reports on recent Chapter Events:
Draw-In at the Osteology Hall - Greater DC Chapter
<http://www.gnsi.org/groups/greater-washington-dc/draw-osteology-hall>*
The GNSI-DC Chapter met on October 9th for a special Draw-In evening. We
started with some great food contributed by the attendees. Everyone
caught up on what everyone was doing as we waited for people to arrive
for the main event. Then we all hiked upstairs to the Osteology Hall in
the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, a collection of
over 300 skeletons of modern vertebrates. We had a great turnout of
about 40 people. Some came to draw and some to hear our speakers...

*Interpreting the Landscape Through the Eyes of Birds - GNSI Oregon
Group
<http://www.gnsi.org/groups/gnsi-oregon-group/gnsi%C3%A2%E2%82%AC%E2%80%9Coregon-interpreting-landscape>*.
The GNSI-Oregon Group met September 22 & 23, 2012 at the Tryon Creek
State Natural Area/Portland, OR. We opened the day with a short business
meeting. Saturday morning Barbara Gleason gave a very informative talk
and demonstration about drawing birds (plumage and the anatomy and
structure of the bird). In the afternoon Rebecca Brown-Thompson gave a
presentation on Sign Interpretation Principles. We made concept maps of
Tryon Park focusing on various topics from birds adapting to human
structures to birds inhabiting Tyron's habitat areas.

Sunday Rebecca gave a demonstration on the use of proportional dividers
and showed us her field sketching gear. The rest of the day was spent
sketching and hiking Tryon Park. We closed this day with a sharing of
our sketches.
