No...i call my phone from my computer whenever i've misplaced it....haha! You incur a different usage cost to phones...computer to computer is FREE! Great for international calls....this is why mariners and the military lead the way in communications technology! Remote locations! This was the topic of my presentation at the Savannah conference but I sadly had to cancel. I'm considering it for the Maine conference...was out at the Shoals Lab off the coast of Maine a few years ago with limited com....we've come a long way in 'public use' communications.

Wow, valuable tools. But you have to use a skype-type app (Like Susan mentioned). Does the person at the other end have to have Skype to answer the phone?

Well, my phone service (verizon) has free phones, so I assume they would work on the same service one buys from Verizon. They are the only service that gets even one bar out here. Something else to consider. Living in town sure has it's advantages, eh?

Another big benefit if you are on the road a lot, it is a giant GPS, nice big screen, and you can track where you are heading, find nearby restaurants and gas stations etc. It doesn't speak to you, which some may consider a benefit, but the map is clear. I don't use my Garmin anymore unless I am traveling alone.

The battery last about 10-12 hours depending on what you are doing, and you can of course get car adapters that keep it charged. You can use it on an airplane, there is a special setting as with smart phones.
