I have found my iPad essential for travel. You have your books, records, papers, a portfolio, your presentation and all related files, you can watch movies when you are trying to relax in the evenings, and upload photos from your camera, keep in touch with emai .
Another big benefit if you are on the road a lot, it is a giant GPS, nice big screen, and you can track where you are heading, find nearby restaurants and gas stations etc. It doesn't speak to you, which some may consider a benefit, but the map is clear. I don't use my Garmin anymore unless I am traveling alone.
The battery last about 10-12 hours depending on what you are doing, and you can of course get car adapters that keep it charged. You can use it on an airplane, there is a special setting as with smart phones.
