Thanks so much to you all! Lots of fuel for thought...still haven't settled on a solution, although I am starting to lean toward the projector as it would be terrific to turn it on and off, not to mention the precision of being able to use a digitally-built grid instead of measuring it all out by hand like I have in the past. Time to start trolling ebay... :)

if no one has suggested this already: one possible workflow could be to tape a pre-drawn grid to the back of your vellum and use a sheet of glass or plexi as a combination light table / drawing board. you can turn the backlight on and off at will to view the grid or hide it.
