Thanks very much Linda, Barry and Britt for your help! I see how question was too broad. I'm interested in illustrating botanical specimens, insects and other arthropods, small reptiles, anything else would be from a photo. I'm not interested in preserving forever (unless its a botanical subject) with but in keeping specimen alive for documentation, and releasing after. All with consideration for conservation. We did some of this in Linda's workshop in Montana. The books you list look great.Interested in information along the lines of this link:Congratulations on your retirement Frank!SharonFrom: [log in to unmask]

Subject: Re: In situ Field techniquesI was thinking the same thing as Britt. There is an old book that I found very useful at the time, for those concerned about the preservation of specimens of vertebrates, but I don't know if it is still widely, if at all, available:Methods of Collecting and Preserving Vertebrate Animals, by R. M. Anderson, National Museum of Canada, third edition revised, 1960; National Museum of Canada Bulletin 69, Biological Series No 18.The book is restricted to the "traditional" museum methods of vertebrate collection and preservation, the results of which are of limited value to artists unless they are co-ordinated with such references as field sketches, colour studies of live or freshly dead specimens, photographs, notes and so on, but to me, if one is going to go to the trouble of preserving a specimen, it is good to do so in a form that can subsequently be of use to museum/university collections (always with regard to legal restrictions and considerations, of course).Barry

Subject: Re: In situ Field techniquesDear Sharon:
Like Britt said, the question is broad.
I would suggest contacting the organization, and get details of what kind of field research is going to be given with their program. It's a good question though. What kind of tools and resources does one need in the field? Many times we go to the field, look around, gather data, take pictures, sketch, then get back to the studio and find we didn't look for such-and-such.So, what you'll be doing and the habitat will be best provided by the organizers. There is so much to consider in any habitat. Also consider the team leaders in the field. What are their credentials? I would think it would be their responsibility to make sure you got the most out of the experience. But we all bring our special interests to the field, and so do the instructors.Best wishes,
Linda

Still looking and asking.
LindaOne that popped into my head was Collecting and Preserving Plants and Animals, by Jens W. Knudsen, 1972. He was a faculty member at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma. I don’t know how available the book is, as I’m sure it’s out of print. But I think it was probably the best all-around of such books. I’ll check for more._____________________

Subject: TAN: Retirement? Nah....Hi All,After 30 years of service, I have decided to step away from my work at
the American Museum of Natural History at the end of the month. It's
been a good run.Over the years I've had to opportunity to hone my skills, studying and
rendering ancient bones in the service of science. I have been able to
travel to strange landscapes and search for fossils weathering out of
prehistoricsea beds. One specimen that I found and carefully dug out of
sandstone walls in Wyoming turned out to be the most complete skeleton
of a primate called Notharctus. He later became one of the species that
was included in Jay Matternes's beautiful primate evolution mural at
AMNH. Elsewhere in the museum, casts of the fellow hang in the Hall of
Fossil Mammals. My painting of the Triassic turtle Proganochelys and its
environment hangs in the Hall of Early Vertebrates. And I even got a
fossil turtle named after me - Taphrosphys ippolitoi. better still, I
have been able to work with some great people along the way - not to
mention all the friends and colleagues I've met through GNSI. And I had
the opportunity to mentor almost three dozen illustration interns - many
of them continuing on to rich careers of their own. Great opportunities
all!Fellow scientific illustrators will recognize that somewhere in that mix
was 30 years of focused study and drawing. Sometimes exciting; sometimes
boring; always challenging. (whew!)It was my work at AMNH that allowed me to branch out into the more
general scientific illustration. I really enjoy the problem-solving
challenges that this field engages me with. (How DOES one take a complex
idea and distill it down into a compelling, easy to read image?) It is
this area I will continue to work as a freelancer on select projects. I
will also continue to teach at FDU and perhaps other venues.Anyone who knows me well knows full well that I am not walking away from
work; I am walking towards it. I've already begun renting a painting
studio at the new Merseles studio center in downtown Jersey City. This
summer I will (finally!) be releasing my CD, Sawdust and the Mud - with
supporting live performances, both solo and with a full band. At the
same time I've been digging deeper and deeper into what I call
time-based imagery - that place where painting, illustration,
filmmaking, and special effects collide. I can't tell you what kind of
work will emerge from this effort (well actually, a music video is in
progress) but it won't be boring! It HAS been a good run. It's time to get busy!PS I'm not certain if my email at amnh.org will have its plug pulled

Subject: Gobsmacked in AtlantaOk, just wanting to vent rather than looking for answers.I was asked very early on to do some illustrations for a children's book
for a non-profit science foundation. I very graciously offered to let them
use one of my illustrations in their kickstarter campaign for free given
that the funds raised would be used to pay artists. They hired a
organization to run their kickstarter campaign and I haven't heard anything
more since Christmas. So, today, I get an e-mail asking me to send finished
preliminary drawings to them by the end of next week and that I would have
2 weeks to complete the artwork once the drawings were approved. I then
look at the dollar amounts being offered, which are low of course, and see
that on top of all that, they want me to sign a work for hire agreement. I
am just foaming at the mouth as you can imagine.Fortunately, the ace in my pocket is that each artist has been paired with
a scientist and I am paired with someone who was a mentor in grad school,
has hired me previously for artwork, who happens to belong to the National
Academy of Sciences and who has received numerous awards for her writing.
She would have no hesitation pulling her chapter from the book. But still, .... really? ..... gobsmacked, just completely gobsmacked.L--

I've already begun renting a painting studio at the new Merseles studio center in downtown Jersey City. This summer I will (finally!) be releasing my CD, Sawdust and the Mud - with supporting live performances, both solo and with a full band. At the same time I've been digging deeper and deeper into what I call time-based imagery - that place where painting, illustration, filmmaking, and special effects collide. I can't tell you what kind of work will emerge from this effort (well actually, a music video is in progress) but it won't be boring!

After 30 years of service, I have decided to step away from my work at the American Museum of Natural History at the end of the month. It's been a good run.

We had a Perfect Storm of everybody being otherwise engaged (Conference! Day Jobs! Life!). Most of the proverbial fires are now extinguished (haha, depends on who you speak to!); production is underway.
