Linda, I use PayPal for receiving payments from my distance students. The payments are deposited into a checking account I have set up for that purpose. In the beginning, and with TransferWise (another program I was wary of at first), I used an account I left very little money in. Like others, I have never had a problem, and like Marni said, the record comes in very handy. Note that PayPal may charge a fee. For domestic transfers, they charge 2.9% plus 30 cents per transaction. For overseas transactions, the fee is 3.9% plus 40 cents (or something close to that). There is also a "friend to friend" option, which carries no fee domestically. I don't know about overseas. Tell your friend to try to use the "friend to friend" option to save you lots of money on that less-than-5M transfer.
