CFP: “Hearing, Moving, Seeing: Interactions in Music, Dance, and Design”: Music and Dance Study Group Evening Session, AMS Boston, Nov 2019 Submission deadline: April 30, 2019 Conference date: November 1, 2019 Keynote Speakers: Millicent Hodson and Kenneth Archer The theme of this year’s AMS Music and Dance Study Group paper session is “Hearing, Moving, Seeing: Interactions in Music, Dance, and Design.” Many musical works that began in the theater have occupied musicologists and theorists in a disengaged state as “the music itself.” Likewise, music meant for the concert hall has found its way into theater and dance productions, accruing movement and scenic values in the process. In response to Millicent Hodson and Kenneth Archer’s several decades of work reconstructing Stravinsky’s dance works, we invite papers that reflect on the lives and afterlives of musical works as they interact with dance and design. Possible topics might address - interpretive alternatives for music that has moved from theater to concert hall, or vice versa - scenic and choreographic forces that have guided musical composition - the concept of *Gesamtkunstwerk *as a theoretical framework for understanding interactions of music, dance, and design - collaborations that have advanced innovation in dance, music, and design - accruals of meaning (political, cultural, aesthetic, and otherwise) in combinations of music, dance, and design - questions of performance in musical works divorced from their original dance context - reconstructive principals for recovering lost dance and design elements of musical stage works The session format allots 20 minutes for each speaker. Send proposals of no more than 300 words via Word document to Chantal Frankenbach (cfranken - at - csus.edu) along with your name, affiliation, and any audio, visual, or other needs for the presentation.
