Dear fellow GNSI members, 1999-2000 Mini-Courses and Workshops in Anatomy at the Schuler School of Fine Arts (This message will have inserted JPEG images. If you are unable to receive them in this form, please let me know and I can send them as attachments. I do not as yet have a home page to refer you to for imagery. My apologies. JS) Skilled drawing is the foundation of the Schuler School curriculum. By stressing the accurate rendering of the shapes of shadows, and the simplifying and measuring of forms, the student learns to train the eye and to create three-dimensional forms on a two-dimensional surface. To draw figures, the study of anatomy is the next step. (All the following illustrations are by Judith Stoffer. All rights reserved.) [Unable to display image] Anatomy for Portraiture: An Introduction to the Skull and Facial Features The human face is so very interesting, but complex! We will look at the basic skeletal structure of the head and shoulders, classical proportions of the ideal head, and how alteration of those ideal proportions creates the individual likeness. Four Saturday mornings, 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon. Fall session: November 13, 20, December 4, 11. Tuition: $100 Spring session: March 25, April 1, 8, 15. Tuition: $100 [Unable to display image] Introduction to Figure Anatomy and the Classical Nude While people are the most complex and magnificent form an artist can tackle, the basics of figure drawing can be mastered by anyone. We will look at the basic skeletal relationships, muscles and their attachments, and identify reliable surface landmarks to guide your figure drawing. Four Saturday mornings, 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon. January 8, 15, 22, 29. Tuition: $100 [Unable to display image] The Hand: A One-Day Workshop Hands reveal character, and hand drawings often fall short because the artist underestimates their complexity. We will look closely at the structure of the hand: not only the skeleton, but the workings of tendons and forearm muscles as well. Saturday, February 19, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Tuition: $60 There will be a mid-day break, so please bring a sack lunch. (Snow date: Saturday, February 26) Prerequisites: a basic understanding of perspective and minimal shading skills enabling the student to draw and shade a cube, sphere, cylinder, and cone. We will do simple drawing exercises to put into practice concepts discussed, so bring a sketchbook and pencil. Instructor: Judith Stoffer Ms. Stoffer has over 30 years of figure-drawing experience, including first-hand experience with cadaver dissection. In addition to studying with Hans C. Schuler, she has a degree from UC Berkeley in art history. She is fond of bones and passionate about the way human beings are constructed.
