The Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize ("The Waterhouse") is awarded by the South Australian Museum Foundation Incorporated. All artists are encouraged to enter including international artists. Staff from the South Australian Museum, the South Australian Museum Foundation Incorporated and people involved with the administration or judging of The Waterhouse are not eligible.
The artwork must depict a natural history topic, which for the purposes of this competition means "A work dealing with natural objects, animal, vegetable or mineral." No work shall include human subjects or human influences such as objects, buildings, stock, vineyards, cleared land etc. Typically a work will focus on animals and plants. If a landscape is entered, it must focus on natural settings and, for example, include animals, forest material, underwater settings or geological phenomena.
Works of art are entered in the following categories:
A. Oil, Acrylic or Mix
B. Watercolour, Pastel, Gouache, Ink, Charcoal, Pencil or Mix
The Waterhouse Art Prize $30,000
People's Choice $2,500
For each category above:
Sizes of Works
Painting should not exceed 1.5m2 in total area, including frame. An indicative maximum size is 150cm x 100cm.
Sculptures must not weigh in excess of 50kg and must fit through a standard doorway assembled (2m x 0.9m).
