I am asked to make an illustration about research of one of the coagulation factors in blood for the renowned journal Blood. I would love to do that because it has been a while since I made something non-technical, so I am thirsty for a biological or medical subject. But... "Blood" requires the authors to hand over their copyright, including that of all illustrations. I gave an estimate that was fairly low before I knew this because I would love to do this, with the remark to the research group that it was indeed a low price, but I never opted for transfer of copyright. There is one other person that they asked to make an estimate and I am not a fan of his work (low quality, not really visible for laymen's eyes, but for a science illustrator it is almost in your face..).

I am in the habit of never transferring copyright, so I even shouldn't be thinking about this, but what would any of you do? Having the opportunity to be published in "Blood" is a big deal that might result in being seen. The illustration that I have in mind will almost surely result to that. I know that they want to go for my offer and not for the other guy, but I am thinking of doubling the price now I know about the copyright or letting it go entirely.
