The books I make have hard covers, open flat and require no gluing. I like the hard covers for sketching without an additional support. They have a soft spine so you can even fold them back on themselves. They take about three hours to make including folding all the pages and measuring. Let me know if you want me to email you an example.
Cheers,
Gretchen

thanks, Gretchen!

Actually, I don't know yet! (Don't tell anyone...no need to rush into these decisions! hah.). I'm leaning toward a stitched, soft cover booklet style, but I need to get my thoughts organized on it and really decide. My initial idea is to avoid the need to glue and just focus on stitched signatures, as they lay so nice and flat. We may talk about hardcover techniques, just to let them know it's an option. Maybe that will be Make-Your-Own-Sketchbook 2!

I like the idea of a sketchbook/sketching weekend! Let's keep it going.

All the classes look great, Gail. What kind of sketchbook are you going to make?

SKETCHING: ANIMALS!
May 8 & August 21, 2010

This program focuses on the challenge of capturing the essence of animal shape and motion from live subjects. Zookeepers will bring a few animals in for up close viewing in the classroom, then we'll head out to observe and sketch several of the rest of the Zoo's residents.

FUR, FEATHERS, AND SCALES: Adding texture to animal drawings and paintings
May 15 & September 11, 2010

Well study the basic structures and varieties of fur, feathers and scales; observe growth patterns, and looks at ways to reproduce their accurate look in our work. Zookeepers will bring a few animals in for up close viewing in the classroom, then we'll head out to observe and sketch several of the rest of the Zoo's residents.

THE NEXT STEPS: FROM SKETCHES TO FINISHED WORK
June 12 & September 25, 2010

You have sketchbooks full of ideas, possibilities, and wanna-bes; but what are the next steps? Well explore the process from sketches to finished art in the classroom and then head out to start some new masterpieces inspired by the Zoo's resident animals and it's lovely grounds.

MAKE YOUR OWN SKETCHBOOK/NATURE JOURNALING
April 24, 2010 Zoo opening weekend

Nature Journaling combines a daily diary with a sketchbook, and allows for a very personal and thoughtful approach to both. We will look at samples of nature journals and sketchbooks, discuss basic sketching techniques and supplies and how to put together a field kit for easy portability.

We will make a soft-cover, hand-sewn sketchbook with materials you select from those provided (there will be a nominal fee for materials). Your book will be hand-sewn, an easy process that results in a book that is sturdy, durable, and lies flat for easy sketching.

WATERCOLOR LANDSCAPES: INTRODUCTION TO FIELD SKETCHING WITH WATERCOLORS
October 9, 2010 (alt date: Oct. 16)
If you ever wanted to capture the essence of Michigan's gorgeous fall scenery using the fun and fluid medium of watercolor, this workshop is for you! After some preliminary discussion about field kits and supplies and a few basics on light and shadow and simple techniques, we will head out to the Zoo's Swamp Adventure walk, an easy loop encompassing an amazing variety of habitats that is always beautiful in the fall.
