An aperitif was taken before a meal to stimulate the appetite, a modern day
example would be the Angostura bitters that are made in Sweden. Sometimes
you hear it referring to appetizers. Obviously it is where the word
appetizer comes from. A digestif, enjoyed after a meal, might have
carminative herbs to help digest the meal or counteract flatulence.

Sorry if I am sharing too much, but this is my field and it rarely comes up
on this listserv.

What is the difference between a "digestif" and an "aperitif"?
