Hi, folks--

My experience was very similar to Carol's. I tried to start the
registration process at 11 am EDT but couldn't even get into the AEA
website until around noon. I quickly registered for the conference but
found the AEA link to the hotel wasn't working. It wasn't until I got the
confirmation for my conference registration with the link to the hotels
that I was able to register for a room--it was now after 12 and I had
already spent an hour on this project, and was now late for a meeting.
Nonetheless I took a few more minutes to try to reserve a Loew's room but
it was already too late. At that point I realized I needed to look at the
map to figure out the best alternatives, but the hotel info on AEA website
didn't clearly indicate which hotels were close and which were not. This
made the hotel selection process more complicated than just pointing and
clicking, but rather involved jumping back and forth between the map and
the list, a numeric ranking and an alphabetical listing, and I did not have
time to study the map until that evening. By then, all the close and
cheaper hotels were booked--seven hours after the registration opened!

I would be curious to hear from the ASSA organizers if this represents a
record, and especially for Philadelphia. Is AEA no longer able to
negotiate lower room rates except for a handful of hotels, even in the cold
first week of January? Does anyone know if the same is happening with MLA?
