Greetings AFEE,

In response to individual complaints from trustees, I contacted the AEA conference organizers to ask about the availability of rooms in Loews.

I was told

a) Loews was booked within 30 minutes.
b) there are no more blocks of rooms available in Loews
c) We should not expect things to be different next year.

I did ask if there was some method of deciding how many rooms to book in each hotel, and was told the AEA tried to book as many rooms as they could in the main conference hotels, and if necessary, will bring additional hotels into the process on an ongoing basis.

I'm left wondering - how many economists does it take to estimate the number of hotel rooms needed for a conference?

With more than 10,000 economists (one shudders at the thought) attending, it is now the norm that the hotels near to the main location fill up within an hour or two of registration opening. They will likely open additional hotels, but those will probably be further out and not as cheap.

I think AFEE should register a complaint about the "bobbles" since neither the Loew's nor any nearby hotels had any rooms available as of last night. I find it hard to believe that all these rooms were gone in less than 24 hours! I ended up booking at the Doubletree, which seems some distance away from Loew's. Anyone else unhappy about this?

This is a great reminder Phil!
I am chiming in to say that while the site had some bobbles when it first went live, it is working smoothly now.  If you tried unsuccessfully to register and reserve a hotel yesterday within the first hour and a half after it opened, I encourage you to give it another go. It's all fixed now.
