As Maerwynn mentions - that just means you need to play with your privacy settings more (and learn to use the "Block" and "Report Spam" functions). :-) I have many times helped people set their privacy and block settings - I'd be willing to lend an additional hand.

As for my own experiences, I've received more spam e-mails from people with Yahoo & Hotmail addresses than anything on Facebook or Google+. ;-)

I don't think it's my settings, really. You know the spam messages that allege they're from someone you know?  The only ones I've ever gotten were folks I friended on Facebook.  Never had it happen from anywhere else I'm active.
I know that eventually I'll have to either break down and use the damn thing, or give up and become a hermit.  But I don't have to like it.  -sticks tongue out at all the young whippersnappers-

Please remember that these are all choices individuals make.  You CHOOSE to be on the Calon-net (or not). You CHOOSE to be on Facebook (or not). As people make different choices, the dynamics of those choices will change.  If you want different results, you need to at least consider different choices.

Hey Morgana,

I know the can of worms is closed, but I've never been spammed from the "Facebook Friends List" and I have two profiles. Maybe if your settings were set up differently? If you'd like to try again, I can help. :)

The death of the email list is sad for me, too, but we've pretty much been without great content on here since the advent of the topic-specific lists. :)

(Yes, Facebook and Google are evil empires out to steal all my identifying features, but Google buzzed my phone this morning to tell me there was an accident on my route to work, and I knew who won crown within minutes by watching it on Facebook. :) I'll probably let somebody put a microchip in my brain, too...) :)

True enough.  Not fair, necessarily, but inevitable.  I've just never been spammed from the CalonList.  Can't say the same from the Facebook Friends List.  Okay, closing up the can of worms now.

They were most likely posted to FB almost immediately from various individuals in various places. Just as people were texting and calling variously to distribute the news. I think the issue here is that there is no requirement (only some folks’ expectations) that current events, announcements and other news be posted to an email list. It certainly is not a reliable source of information. Furthermore, as usage of social media progresses, I expect the email list to become increasingly outdated and used less – the world is moving on. And it is far easier to participate vicariously through others on FB, after all…  ;]
