The Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership is excited to announce that there are still spots available for our popular summer Maine SEAL programs for students!
 Come Explore with Us!
Our field-based exploratory science programs focus on engaging students with the natural world, showing them science at its living, breathing, best. Along the way, students also gain valuable leadership and collaboration skills and have a ton of fun hiking, sailing, rock climbing, and relaxing on one of the most beautiful islands off Maine's coast. Maine Science, Exploration, Adventure, Leadership (SEAL) Programs

For Students Ages 12-15
August 15-21 (Nature Journaling and the Art of Natural History Illustration) $1400
The Maine SEAL program helps middle school students foster their excitement for real-world science and inquiry through a creative and artistic lens. Over the course of this 7-day program, students explore and become familiar with the charismatic birds, wildflowers, trees, marine animals, and mammals that define Hurricane Island's terrestrial landscape, coastline, and surrounding waters.

This introductory field science program helps students translate their exploration into observations, which form the base of scientific inquiry and discovery. By developing, organizing, and maintaining a field journal, Maine SEAL students can closely observe and document the unique ecology and natural history of Hurricane Island.

Students will learn how to collect samples; to balance fact, theory, data, narrative, and visuals in their field journals in an organized, clear, and consistent format; drawing techniques and sketching exercises that focus on scale, form, and contour, and communicating a hierarchy of information; and take part in fun art projects that use seaweed, photo-sensitive paper, sculpture, and found objects to interpret and communicate scientific concepts. Our program also introduces students to the work of famous naturalists and natural history illustrators, and the visual and narrative strategies they used to communicate their voyages and discoveries.
