*Tour of Q?rius Facilities at Smithsonian's NMNH 
GNSI-DC October Meeting*
*DATE:* October 21, 2014 - 5:30pm - 8:00pm
October's 21st meeting will be a tour of Q?rius (pronounced "Curious") 
at Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. Now in existence 
for about a year, Q?rius is a place that was created specifically for 
"teens and tweens" and their families as a new type of education center, 
pairing unusual and fun experiences in science and making sense of them 
in terms of everyday life.

Renowned botanical illustrator Dick Rauh, a fellow of the Brooklyn 
Botanic Garden Florilegium Society, has drawn a number of trees in the 
living collection, including specimens from the Gardens important bonsai 
collection, the focus of this exhibition.


*California Native Plant Society - Call for the 2015 Art Exhibit 
The California Native Plant Society is preparing for the CNPS 2015 
Conservation Conference: Celebrating 50 Years of Progress and Promise. 
The conference will be held January 13-17, 2015. This juried botanical 
art exhibition will encourage a greater understanding and appreciation 
of the unique California flora, one of the goals of the conference.

Take your prior experience in watercolor to a new level on your artistic 
journey. Challenge yourself with further exploration into the realm of

foundation of your art with advanced techniques on subjects most 
familiar in the Sonoran desert.

*Sonoran Desert Birds II- Weekend Workshop with Linda Feltner 
DATE:* October 31 - November 2, 2014
*LOCATION:* Arizona Sonora Desert Museum Art Institute
*[NOTE: * Certificate Elective Prerequisite: Drawing I + Sonoran Desert 
Birds Workshop I (or equivalent)]
Take your bird drawing skills up a notch! This workshop will move beyond 
bird drawing basics and concentrate on techniques and skills that will 
achieve greater accuracy. Further techniques for drawing and painting 
feathers as well as eyes, beaks and feet, will provide greater 
confidence and accuracy. The study will include slides, specimens, as 
well as the engaging avian ambassadors from the desert museum.

*Celebrations For Days Of The Dead (Dias De Los Muertos)

Days of the Dead (Das de los Muertos) is the Latin American holiday 
coinciding with Halloween and All Souls Day. This week-long 
workshop/retreat explores the cultural history, ideology, and creative 
whimsy of this ancient acknowledgment and transcendence of death.

*Artistic Adventure Tour - Costa Rica 
DATE: *February 6 - February 16, 2015

Nancy Richmond- Nature Photographer
n this 10 day workshop students will tour the country of Costa Rica. 
Travel to different locations where the rainforest is our classroom. 
Learn field sketching, field research, color notation, composition and 
to use digital photography for reference details. This workshop is for 
all levels and welcomes photographers as well.

*Layering Watercolors with Peggy Macnamara 
DATE: *October 25 - October 26, 2014 (2 Sessions)
*LOCATION:* Cornell Plantations Nevin Welcome Center, Cornell 
University, Ithaca, NY
*COST: *$180; $160 for members of Plantations and GNSI
The GNSI Finger Lakes Chapter has partnered with the Cornell Plantations 
to invite Peggy Macnamara to Ithaca, NY to teach her watercolor 
technique. This class is made possible with a grant from the GNSI 
Education Fund.


Distance Learning Opportunity 
GNSI Member and teacher Gretchen Halpert is beginning a new session of 
her independent study course "Scientific Illustration-Distance 
Learning". It begins October 6. This is the first session of the series.
