John attended medical school at the University of Arkansas and did his psychiatric residency at Menninger's in Topeka. After a year working as a psychiatrist at Larned State Hospital, he came to Hays to be the psychiatrist and director of the High Plains Mental Health Center, a position he held from 1965 until retiring in 1986.
John has published many medical-art and anatomy illustrative books. He also published the biographies of Emily Dickinson and Max Brodel. He is internationally known for his moth paintings as the Audubon of Moths.
Children of the couple are: daughter Loren, husband Mark and son Zac, daughter Andrea, and son Ethan, son Graham, wife Renee and daughter Rowan.
