I have let several huge mulleins grow up near my front door.  Right now they are towering over my head and have multiple branches.  We have taken to calling them Triffids ... people seem to agree.  Sorry I can’t see your Triffid.

I spent some time this week creating a life size cut out painted Triffid this week. Not sure what category that fits into but it was fun.

You may be getting that impression, but it’s not what anyone said, that I know of.  What is “worthy” or “unworthy” in art is subjective; a matter of opinion based on a multitude of factors.

There was once a Dutchman who tried to be an artist, but failed.  He could not produce art.  No one liked it.   His name was Vincent van Gogh.  The garbage that he produced is no longer garbage, it is great art.  The painting didn’t change, public values, attitudes and so on did.

There are things I like and things I don’t like, but that’s just me.   I don’t speak for GNSI or anyone else, but since you brought it up, a list serving artists is, really by definition, serving iconoclasts, individualists, and so you are likely to find a unified opinion.

The people who decide what is “art” or what is “good” vs “bad” art, tend to be art dealers, gallery directors, art museum curators, art critics, art agents, art editors, popular media and, above all I would argue, art buyers.   There is no “science” to it.

What one person like or does not like and the will be viewed differently than the next.

One thing I do agree with what you say, though, is that the language is somewhat limited in discussing this topic.   I, too, would like to see more nuance in how art is described without denigrating one or the other type or school, BUT, I still believe that we should have, and be able to exercise, personal opinion.   It’s probably not unusual that in a field where an ability to realistically portray something that many (not all) of us would have a taste for more representational art.

If you read this little gem (to me) of a book by Thomas Wolfe (http://www.amazon.ca/The-Painted-Word-Tom-Wolfe/dp/0312427581) you’ll see how he skewers those people I call art snobs, but not because of what they like, but because of what they don’t like, the “snob” part of their attitude.

Cheers,

Barry

I appreciate Linda’s work. I am getting the impression from this discussion though that if a work is not a representation of something else it is somehow unworthy. This cuts out a lot of C20 and C21 Art. Is that what people are implying? I believe the work the GNSI does in promoting the field of illustration is most worthy. I am proud of my work as a botanical illustrator but would like to have a term for my other work which values it without denigrating illustration.

It isn’t.  What annoys me is not people who appreciate or find value in “main stream Fine Art”, but art snobs defined as people who do that while excluding or degrading other kinds of art requiring equal or greater skill, talent, passion or commitment.

If they don’t, they aren’t snobs.

You’re not a snob if you appreciate the wonderful ability of Linda, regardless of what else you may  or may not like.

I didn’t think offending art snobs was part of the role of the GNSI.

This is great and do I every wish we saw a few more articles on the subject written this well.

The art-snobs too often refuse to acknowledge animals or plants as fit subjects unless incidental to something else, and as for scientific illustration, it’s often looked on, if at all, with disdain, and yet I believe (and you demonstrate) that some of the best contemporary art is being done by the so-called “illustrators” and “wildlife artists”, not the guys who paint white canvases or glue black urinals to boards.   It is not that I care about people valuing such stuff if they want, but can’t the tent be large enough to include talent, skill and dedication such as we see from members of this list.

Anyway, very well done; you know I’m your fan.

Cheers,

Barry
