Techniques Sheets III
The newly-revised GNSI Techniques Sheets 3 is now available! This is a revamped publication, with some new articles on digital techniques, and full color for the first time. You can purchase a copy at a reduced member rate from the GNSI Store (log in first to see the member pricing). 

GNSI YouTube Channel
That's right, we now have a YouTube channel where well be posting videos of GNSI events (presentations, conferences), interviews, technique demos and other science illustration related moving images. This is a great new resource, be sure to check back often as new videos are posted.


New Florilegium Publication Available for Pre-Order
A discounted pre-publication price is available until January 30. Sales assist the society with printing costs. The books will be released March 1.

The Florilegium Society at Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney is offering their new 224 page hardback book, The Florilegium, celebrating 200 years of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney. The book features 87 full-color plates of fine, contemporary botanical illustration. The term florilegia applies literally to a book that is dedicated to ornamental rather than the medicinal or utilitarian plants covered by herbals. Modern florilegia seek to record collections of plants, often now endangered, from within a particular garden or place. 

GNSI Member Ikumi Kayama Featured Interview
Ikumi Kayama was recently interviewed by Petovera, a web marketing firm, on her web marketing strategies for landing new clients. Ikumi is the GNSI Board Recording Secretary, a TEDx speaker, and owner of Studio Kayama; she specializes in medical illustration. Check out the interview for web marketing ideas.

Ins and Outs of Sonoran Desert Mammals

This 2-day workshop is set up to give art students a taste of a lab class, to gain their own appreciation and understanding of what goes on under the hair of mammals. Studying the skull and entire skeletal and muscular system will give a glimpse into the animals lifestyle, and help with life sketching.

Since 2011, the Denver Botanical Gardens have included a distance learning option at Denver Botanic Gardens, which has been a hybrid (in-class/off-site). DBG is excited to announce they are expanding our distance learning option to Arlington, VA, offering a selection of 3-day weekend classes at Gallery Underground (2100 Crystal City, Arlington, VA). A premiere opportunity to display your best art! Focus on Nature XIV will run from December 3, 2016 through April 9, 2017 at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute (RTPI) in Jamestown, New York. We are very excited and honored to collaborate with this institute that is dedicated to continuing the tradition of natural history illustration. The RTPI mission is to honor and continue to foster understanding, appreciation and protection for the natural world. RTPI is a beautiful facility with exhibition space of high standard. 

GNSI-Great Lakes Exhibit Invitation: Exploring the World of Birds

The GNSI-Great Lakes Chapter invites all GNSI members living in states that border the Great Lakes to exhibit this spring at the Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods, Riverwoods, Illinois. Subject matter can include birds, nests, eggs, bird related plants, etc.  All media and styles will be considered. 

Margaret Flockton Award
ENTRY DEADLINE: Friday 19 February 2016

The Margaret Flockton Award is open to Australian and overseas artists producing scientific botanical illustrations of a high standard. The competition focuses on black & White and greyscale images. Cash prizes are awarded to the top two award winners.

Denver Botanic Gardens Artist in Residency
This is an exciting opportunity for an illustrator/artist to get involved in the daily happenings at the Denver Botanic Gardens. The Summer Residency provides an opportunity for the selected illustrator/artist to get involved in a variety of activities at the Denver Botanic Gardens, from participation in open studios, demonstrations and educational projects in the classroom or the Science Pyramid to developing a blog or other online documentation.

The World Illustration Awards
ENTRY DEADLINE: Monday 8 February 2016

This is an exhibit competition sponsored by the Association of Illustrators (AOI), based in London. The World Illustration Awards are open to illustrators in any country working in any medium or context. The Terms of use seem to be very fair, and they have a specific category called Research & Knowledge Communication.
