20th and 21st-Century Song Cycles for Voice and Piano.
CFP Deadline: June 1, 2017
Conference Dates: April 20-22, 2018
Conference Venue: Michigan State University College of Music

“20th- and 21st-Century Song Cycles for Voice and Piano,” a conference
hosted by the Michigan State University College of Music on April 20-22,
2018, will bring together scholars and performers interested in exploring
this music from complementary perspectives. We envision a series of paired
presentations, each comprising a 30-minute paper followed by a performance
of the full cycle. This announcement serves as a call for proposals for the
paper components of these presentations.

Given the hybrid format of the conference, each presentation should be
limited in scope to a single song cycle for one voice and piano composed in
the 20th or 21st century. While one or more songs of the cycle certainly
may receive more attention than others, papers should address the cycle as
a whole including what ties the individual songs into a larger work. Papers
that would be of interest to a broader audience of not only music scholars,
but also performers of song cycles are especially encouraged. An aim of the
conference is to explore a diverse representation of composers, poets, and
voice types. 500-word abstracts can be sent electronically to cycles -at- and must be received by June 1, 2017.
