Description - We seek a post-doctoral research associate to help lead an effort to complete a comprehensive phylogeny and cybertaxonomic database of deltocephaline leafhoppers (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae). The start date will be as soon as possible. The position is full time, grant funded and the initial appointment is for two years. Renewal for a third year is contingent on satisfactory job performance. The incumbent will work with a diverse team at INHS including research scientists, programmers, graduate and undergraduate students and technicians.
Major Duties & Responsibilities - Duties will be shared with other team members but may include any or all of the following: sort and identify leafhopper specimens to genus and species; conduct comparative morphological study to compile data relevant for identification of genera and species and for phylogenetic analysis; screen transcriptome and genome data; develop and implement DNA sequencing and analytical protocols for estimating phylogenetic relationships among deltocephaline leafhoppers; contribute to an existing cybertaxonomic database by curating data and images. The incumbent will be expected to visit other institutions with holdings of specimens relevant to the project, conduct data analyses prepare research results for publication, and present results at scientific meetings. The position will require the supervision of undergraduate, graduate, and/or other hourly employees.
Qualifications - Applicants must possess a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in entomology, evolutionary biology or a related discipline with a focus on insect systematics must be received by date of hire. If receipt of Ph.D. is within the last year, proof of receipt will be required.
Experience - Required: Prior experience working with insect research collections, molecular laboratory methods including compilation and analysis of DNA sequence data; experience working with cybertaxonomic and genomic databases; strong quantitative skills; robust attention to detail, organizational, interpersonal and communications skills; and leadership and supervisory skills. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong record of peer-reviewed publication in leafhopper systematics.
Salary - $47,500
