Perhaps now would be a great time to introduce an idea that Dave Furth and I have been discussing for a while now.  Publishing a book on entomological collections management (policies, procedures and best practices).  Some to many of you will likely be solicited to be authors on the chapters.  We are hoping to finalize the outline for the book in the next year or so and then really jump into writing, editing and soliciting chapters in 2019/2020.

Thanks, Lynn! I'd be very interested in seeing that.

Folks,
This does raise the need for a best practices document or something similar for alcohol-preserved collections. I think we've seen the worst and the best here at the Bohart Museum. I can certainly give lots of suggestions on what not to do (like preserving specimens in mouthwash in baby food bottles...) as a result of an NSF grant we got to salvage our alcoholic collection. I have a powerpoint on the subject if anyone is interested I can send a pdf.

Hi Christy,
That is a great idea - a colleague who's a new collection manager just asked me
for some contacts for alcohol collections - your idea will be helpful is showing
what other collections do. I have a few pictures from my collection and can
take more.

Hi Christy,
Thank you for your great offer! I truly believe that it would provide all a significant insight of good practices, ideas, hints, tips and tricks on various aspects of collection management. One idea of hosting such a collection would be to create a Scratchpads.eu site where users can also contribute, comment and distribute relevant material. The good thing is that in that way we could also maintain different groupings for subjects by tagging the same pictures on different clusters of information.

Anyway, I think it’s a great idea and we should go for it!

Best,
Christos

Subject: Reference photos of other insect collections

Hi all,
I find it extremely helpful to visit other insect collections to learn how things are done in other institutions. I take a lot of pictures, of jars, door handles, labels, cabinets, etc and refer back to them in my own practices. I'm wondering if a reference collection of images from other insect collections would be helpful to others?

And if so, what would be the best way to host the images? As files on the ECN facebook page, a google doc, possibly on the iDigBio site, or something else?

I'd love to hear what other people think of this idea.

Thanks for any input,
-Christy Bills
