Sorry, it was the polyseal caps specifically. Why was polypropylene caps determined to be better than the polyseal, especially for the smaller sized vials? -Michelle From: Brett Ratcliffe [mailto:[log in to unmask]] Sent: Friday, February 24, 2017 1:54 PM To: Kohler, Michelle Marie <[log in to unmask]>; [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: Alcohol Collections not sure where "2 dram vials are discouraged" since the article explicitly states that is what we use. True cork disintegrates. the orangy red latex corks liquefy turning to glue, and the synthetic corks (black, green, or whitish) often swell becoming impossible to remove. The tubes and the metal drawers are an interesting option. I was curious why 2 dram vials with Polyseal caps were not recommended. My experience with them has been very positive. After 20-30 years, I have had to top a few off, but even then I was not sure whether it was due to evaporation or that they had never been topped off to begin with. My guess is that most of these vials would be good for >50 years. I do have a small percent of vials that fail if the vial is chipped or if the caps got dirty in the field and no one noticed, but that does not occur with valuable collections because I don't use bad vials or dirty caps with them. I truly believe that it would provide all a significant insight of good practices, ideas, hints, tips and tricks on various aspects of collection management. One idea of hosting such a collection would be to create a Scratchpads.eu site where users can also contribute, comment and distribute relevant material. The good thing is that in that way we could also maintain different groupings for subjects by tagging the same pictures on different clusters of information. I take a lot of pictures, of jars, door handles, labels, cabinets, etc and refer back to them in my own practices. I'm wondering if a reference collection of images from other insect collections would be helpful to others? And if so, what would be the best way to host the images? As files on the ECN facebook page, a google doc, possibly on the iDigBio site, or something else? I'd love to hear what other people think of this idea.
