*The Music Department of Bates College announces a one-year position for a
music theorist or musicologist to begin on August 1st, 2017.*

The teaching load for this position consists of five courses within the
academic year. Teaching responsibilities include three courses in Music
Theory (on the material ranging from the 18th to the 20th Century
repertoire), Classical Music in Western Culture, and a course in the
applicant’s area of expertise commensurate with our culturally and
historically engaged approach to music within liberal arts education. A
completed or nearly completed doctorate in music theory or musicology is
expected, and a specialization in music cognition would be especially

letter, curriculum vitae, teaching and/or research statement, and graduate
transcripts. Please also arrange for the submission of three letters of
recommendation (one of whom can speak to your teaching experience or
capabilities). A sample of scholarly writing, if requested by the
department, will be reviewed beginning April 24, 2017. Employment is
contingent upon successful completion of a background check.
