I agree with Britt. Back in the day I heard to ask for 10x the one-time use. I tried it a couple times and got laughed at (hysterically, as in "It's April Fool's Day, right?"). 2x - 5x is more realistic.

As for name credit, I suggest you make sure you have that in a written contract. When it is a buyout in the sense of work-for-hire, the client usually will put their own name or omit it altogether sense wfh technically means you didn't do the art in the first place (though this is negotiable and I've had work for hire credited to me). When not work-for-hire I think it is whatever you both agree on.

Best regards,
Lynette

I have heard:

In general Buyouts go from 2x - 5x the initial one time use of the work. I expect the multiplier depends on the amount of re-usage you expect the art to have, and the "commercialness" of the project (i.e. - a monied client who will be making money from your piece). You are of course free to ask what you want, but I think that is considered the realistic envelope.

And you generally retain the copyright notice in your name.

Subject: [SCIART] copyright buy out

Im working on a commercial project. The client wants to purchase all copyrights to artwork. Id like to hear comments on up-pricing" for a complete buyout.

Thanks.
