UAIC Visiting Arthropod Systematist Program
Supported by an endowment from the Schlinger Foundation

Purpose: This award is intended to help offset expenses for visiting systematists to work in the University of Arizona Insect Collection (UAIC) on their specialty group during their sabbatical leaves. During their visit, awardees will enhance knowledge of their group in the Sonoran Desert Region and enhance the curatorial state of the specimens in the University of Arizona Insect Collection and associated digital data.

Amount: We expect to provide award(s) annually, totaling $25,000.

Selection: A committee will make the selection based on the criteria described below.

Eligibility: Anyone with taxonomic expertise and a currently active research program may apply. Applicants must have demonstrated skills needed to advance the systematics of their target group and enhance the UAIC collection.

Requirements. Applicants must agree to do the following:
  • Work in the UAIC for a minimum of three months while studying the Sonoran Desert Region members of the taxon of their expertise.
  • Publish results from the Award on one or more of these topics: taxonomy, ecological plasticity, niche breadth, biogeography, or diversity of the taxon of their expertise.
  • Curate and database the specimens of that taxon in the UAIC.
  • Present a seminar to the Department of Entomology about their research.

Preference given to:
  • Applicants on sabbatical leave.
  • Applicants who plan to work on taxa neglected in the UAIC. Send all inquiries regarding UAIC holdings to UAIC Collection Manager, Gene Hall wehall(@)email.arizona.edu

Application procedure:

The deadline for applications is 1 April, 2018. Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.
