The only way that AAAS can deal with this embarrassing advertisement will be for them to provide an editorial column about importance of taxonomy and accept culpability for their error in the next issue of SCIENCE.

First, I am serious about this, I am not joking.

I have written to Coleopterist Society President Derek Sikes suggesting that the Coleopterists Society give a special award to the AAAS for the best example of the danger represented by the ongoing decline in taxonomic expertise among the Science community, and invite the President of AAA to receive the award at the Annual Meeting in Vancouver.

Please join me in this proposal by writing to Derek.

Can we turn this into a positive teaching moment?

Wow. A complete "taxonomy fail" for what should be the premiere scientific organization. This does not inspire faith in *any* endeavors of the AAAS. Don't they understand that? Thank you for your letter to them, gentlemen.

Nearly one-fourth of all classified species on Earth are beetles—with more than 100 lineages that can be traced back to the Mesozoic era. Zoologists say there’s a reason for this: Sustained diversification has given beetles an evolutionary leg up. 1

There’s a lesson here: Diversity equals success. And we have to keep at it.

At AAAS we’re doing our part to encourage and promote diversity—both in STEM education and in the science, tech, and engineering professions. But we can’t do it without you.

Whether you’re a career scientist or a passionate champion for science, help AAAS bring fresh perspectives to the world’s toughest questions.
