Call for Proposals:

2019 UT-Austin Graduate Music Conference invites proposals from current graduate students that focus on music and culture of the Americas.


Prospective presenters should submit an abstract of no more than 350 words to utaustingmc -at- by Tuesday, January 15, 2019. To ensure impartiality, please do not include any personal identifiers in your abstract file attached. Label your attachment (.doc, .docx, or .pdf) with the paper title only. In the body of the email, please include your name, institutional affiliation, program and concentration (e.g. PhD in Musicology), and request for any accommodations. Papers are to be approximately twenty minutes in length and will be followed by a ten-minute discussion session. Keynote Speaker:

This years keynote speaker is Dr. Ellie M. Hisama, Professor of Music, Music Theory and Historical Musicology at Columbia University. Her current research focuses on Marian Anderson's performance of spirituals arranged by African American composers, Ruth Crawford's work as a composer and arranger, and the Bay Area- and Chicago-based collective Asian Improv aRts. Author of Gendering Musical Modernism and co-editor of Critical Minded: New Approaches to Hip Hop Studies and Ruth Crawford Seeger’s Worlds, Hisama specializes in twentieth- and twenty-first-century music, post-tonal theory, American music, popular music, gender and feminist studies, critical studies of music and race, and the social and political dimensions of music.


The Conference is organized by UT-Austin AGEMS (The Association of Ethno/Musicology Students, and co-sponsored by the Musicology & Ethnomusicology division and the Center for American Music at UT-Austin.
