> With great sadness we note the passing yesterday of a great icon, gentleman, and hero of the AMI. Robert J. Demarest, FAMI, has passed away due to complications from heart surgery.
>
> Bob twice served as president of the association, and he also served as chair of the board. He was a Fellow of the AMI, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the AMI in 1989, and authored History of the Association of Medical Illustrators, published in 1995 for the AMI's 50th anniversary meeting.
>
> He spent his entire professional career at Columbia University, and his work appeared in dozens of medical textbooks, countless research papers, medical journals, and many well-known magazines. In 1995, Bob was the recipient of the Ranice W. Crosby Distinguished Achievement Award from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. This only scratches the surface of his achievements; he was truly a titan in our field.
>
> Bob's contributions to our profession are too numerous to count, and words cannot adequately convey his importance to the AMI. He was a great inspiration to new AMI members and a good friend to those of us who have known him for many years.
> When funeral arrangements have been made, we will be sure to communicate this to the membership. Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts during this difficult time.
