Thank you Aurore,

I worked with Karen offlist, and discovered that it is indeed the 'Float 
All Windows' option that did the trick.  Karen is a Guild Treasure!  A 
hard problem to explain, but with a simple solution.

Window->Arrange->Float all in Windows!  Now I can proceed smoothly.
