I normally use the Airfloat Strongbox - Lined (puncture-proof "they say" :) Which is a similar product to Uline. I don't build my own anymore. I have used them several times over. Easy to install and customize for artwork, etc. They hold up well to international shipping, too. I've had to retire a few. I've got about 5 sitting over against the wall, different sizes. I get a 20% discount from one of my art society groups, and that is really helpful.
I have just ordered a special size (huge) for this framed painting. Yes, I always use UV Plex, also. I do not ship glass ,unless it's a really small piece and I can use that film over it to prevent shards.
In the contract and shipping instructions, there are limitations to shipping with wooden materials with customs, and if wood packing is used they require a certificate of "some code" about materials. I am just not using wood.
Thanks for the thoughts, they are all helpful.
Cheers,
Linda

When in grad school, I lived near Light Impressions (an archival supply company who also shipped artwork to museums). Their shipping containers were handmade boxes - made of corrugated board, layered. Top and bottom panels were masonite. I made my own with foam core, and if you want I can send you some pictures.
These days, I love the Uline art shipping boxes that are reinforced with with some kind of dense plastic and have foam all around. I am only must now retiring one of my boxes - I’ve used it for shipping for years and it’s finally pretty worn out. They aren’t cheap, but they aren’t prohibitive either. I never ship glass - only plexiglass (UV filtered).

Get a professional museum/art packer to pack it and let them now how its being shipped (DHL is good). Its expensive but it will get there and be in one piece when it arrives. Ask if purchaser will help cover costs.
Hi All:
I have been contacted by one of the four members of the contingent from the Zhejiang Museum of Natural History. This group came to the GNSI 2017 Conference in North Carolina, meeting many of us at the Portfolio Review night. They wish to purchase a specific painting of mine for their collection.
I wondered if anyone had recommendations for international shippers, and also independent insurance? The contract states they will provide shipping insurance, but I am researching purchasing independent insurance for artwork.
I have shipped a lot through UPS internationally to exhibitions. I have purchased insurance through UPS, however if anything ever was damaged (yes, I know many horror stories) it will be a tedious process to prove the claim, especially if it's original art. A long time ago, FEDEX offered "insurance" but it was not really insurance, one just paid for a high-value declaration. The fine print used to say $250 max, altho you pay for declaring a multi-thousand dollar painting. I don't ship with FEDEX for that reason - but their policy may have changed, of course. I have friends who prefer to ship through them.
I am a naturally cautious businesswoman, especially when it comes to international shipping and sales. Your thoughts are very welcome.
Best,
Linda
