The School of Music at the University of Washington in Seattle seeks a scholar of music history for a full-time, tenure-track appointment at the level of Assistant Professor, to begin September 16, 2020. This position is a nine-month annual service term, with an initial three-year appointment. The area of expertise sought is post-1900, in order to complement the research and teaching activities of the current academic and performing faculty of the School of Music. We welcome applicants who represent a broad array of approaches to the issues of repertory, composers, and trends; the School of Music will appreciate this range of research methodology. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in research that will have significant influence on the field of musicology, to pursue a well-developed research agenda and teach a variety of courses in music history at the graduate, undergraduate, and general education levels. Currently, M.A. students in music history can select an early music performance concentration, working with early music specialists to combine research and performance; and we hope to hire someone who will support a similar collaboration for graduate music history students who study contemporary music.

A review of applications will begin on October 15, 2019. To apply, submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, one sample of writing (an article or dissertation chapter), a statement of teaching philosophy, and a statement on perspectives and contributions to equity, diversity and inclusion; please request three reference letters that can address the teaching experience and research promise of the applicant. All application materials and letters of reference should be submitted via Interfolio.
