I prefer using the wedge-shaped scratchboard tool — I’ve never liked the scoop-shaped one. Geoff Thompson (in Australia) had some lovely scratchboard tools.

My favorites are still the #11 and #16 X-acto blades, as well as scalpels, lots of different dental tools, sharpened eye repair screwdrivers, sharpened darning needles, wire brushes, etc. Friends and family know that if it can make a texture and they leave it out, I consider it fair game. I’ll have to try the steel wool — I haven’t tried that yet :-)

I’ve had a lot of trouble with my hands, and have tried a variety of “holders” over pencils and other tools. I used to be able to find small, hollow, rubber balls at craft stores. I would cut slits and they would slide over easily. I haven’t looked for them in a while, but the round shape worked well for my hand problems. I’ve also constructed holders out of pool noodles (messy and didn’t work well), and a physical therapist once suggested using small styrofoam balls from a craft store. I didn’t like the texture, however, and it took a lot of tape to cover them up and keep them from sliding around.

Pink hair roller foam sounds awesome.

Thank you for all the suggestions!

One inexpensive solution was foam hair rollers--just dismantle the foam roller from the clip -- it can wrap easily around a drawing tool, is fat enough to cushion. I don't know if they are still sold these days, but it really helped my with my vice-like grasp of various tools. And, it's PINK!
