The hard drives are hermetically sealed, so the only issues are wear and tear and humidity. SSD solves both those issue at a higher price point. If you keep the original anti-static bag a internal drive comes in, put it in a ziplock and throw in a silica gel pack and then put it in a cool dry place, the downside of the internal drives disappear and you keep the lower price point.

Read the section on SSD vs HDD Lifespan on this page.
https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.stellarinfo.co.in_kb_ssd-2Dvs-2Dhdd.php&d=DwIGaQ&c=Cu5g146wZdoqVuKpTNsYHeFX_rg6kWhlkLF8Eft-wwo&r=AGYZ7-AeerjxzYnIwL-lBLFI3SPYN3BDmku4qGQB4Tg&m=yAkDyr4L14fi4TWYE_j-ewB0plpg1CRG2Ls5goX6E1E&s=z2CwyukaXF8nnHttkucY3Pgrjz5mYD6iv7RZ1HHBWvA&e=

This seems to be several years old, so some pricing comparisons may be wrong. They also assume you are actively using the drives, but there are some useful concepts here. Bottom line from this article: Experts believe the SSD drives will last longer than hard drives.

But in your situation, with a plastic bag and silica gel, I think it may not be the case. If you cannot ensure the storage conditions, long term the SSD might be better…

Ohhhhhh, wow.. Thank you very much! Very clever idea. I would not have thought of that.

The fellow at B&H that I spoke to, also recommended LaCie, and G-Technology. I have a G-Technology and a WD from years ago, they are still going (so far).

Do you think the SSDs have greater longevity? less moving parts?

I have diskcatalogmaker! bought some while ago. I really has saved time in searching files. Thanks for the reminder. I am so eager to clear out the archives, that I'm like a badger digging through them. Thanks for the reminder that I should keep up with the catalog as part of the archiving!

Thank you very much,
Linda

Linda,

I have been very happy with the LaCie portable drives, but if you are just planning to use it as offline long term backup, you might want to get a box that you can just plug bare internal drives into and then pull them out and wrap them in a proper storage bag with silica crystals for long term storage.

I would accept a Western Digital or a Seagate internal hard drive without much worry (2 & 3 Terabyte drives are $50-$100), especially if it will get limited use. I think that proper storage conditions will be more important.

You will want a library/archiving software so you can search for material while the disks are offline. I have used
https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__diskcatalogmaker.com&d=DwIGaQ&c=Cu5g146wZdoqVuKpTNsYHeFX_rg6kWhlkLF8Eft-wwo&r=AGYZ7-AeerjxzYnIwL-lBLFI3SPYN3BDmku4qGQB4Tg&m=yAkDyr4L14fi4TWYE_j-ewB0plpg1CRG2Ls5goX6E1E&s=3BAODG4XN9opbZ3ZsjRUYr1OxovmwunWrj-NS4x0moE&e= <https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__diskcatalogmaker.com&d=DwMGaQ&c=Cu5g146wZdoqVuKpTNsYHeFX_rg6kWhlkLF8Eft-wwo&r=AGYZ7-AeerjxzYnIwL-lBLFI3SPYN3BDmku4qGQB4Tg&m=g8qVeVksd-VwSR2sorWZVPi6JpRjTQQ0NphLsGHZ_Y0&s=v-aoO4zEQ5rzuF-Ime-oWDcNf-pDzo5MBe7YExd9L6M&e=> The older version was free, but the new supported version is $40, well worth it if you plan to keep a lot of old work offline. You might also be able to you the Adobe Bridge software, but like all adobe software it seems bloated compared to Diskcatalogmaker…

So you might have a total solution for less than $150.

Britt

Subject: [EXTERNAL] [SCIART] External Hard Drives for Mac

Hi there,

I am doing a Studio Purge of old client paper documents and design documents (goin' way way back). I can pour my excess energy into something quite productive :)

I am looking to purchase another external hard drive (I have several over the years). I am looking for a BRAND and type that has a reputation for reliable shelf-life. I am going to dump my files onto it, and not use it. I won't use it for Time Machine. This one will simply go into storage on a shelf. I'm not interested in high transfer speed or the latest cords, I really want longevity. I'm not sure capacity is a factor, I don't need massive storage for this one.

In the past, I have purchased OWC Mercury Elite Pros, GlyphTechnologies Blackbox Pro, and others. I've only had a Maxtor give out on me.
Can you please pass on any recommendations?

Many thanks
Linda
