Britt,

Habit mostly.

In a pinch, when I’ve needed to keep file sizes smaller, I’ve used LZW compression. But if something is being archived… technology changes and who knows what compression algorithms will be in the future and if newer programs will read older compressed images. So basically, I try to keep things simple.

As an example, I occasionally come across an old PICT image and those don’t seem to open (thankfully, not anything I need).

Any more, drive space isn’t much of an issue so I don’t need to worry about smaller file sizes.

Karen, TIFF LZW compression is suppose to be lossless. Why do you recommend not using LZW?

I’d have to agree with Bruce. I’d suggest saving them as either a Photoshop file or TIFF (no compression). Photoshop of course means you’d need a Photoshop to open the file. But a TIFF is not linked to any app and should open in a variety of apps.

Has anyone done this: changed from jpeg to camera raw or dng format? Can this be done to batches of photos? I'm very interested in doing so because of the data loss problem with jpegs; we are archiving a ton of photos right now.

Thank you,
MaryBeth
