Call for papers
Nineteenth-Century Music Review themed issue on The Musical Sublime in the
Nineteenth Century
Deadline for proposals, October 1, 2020

We invite proposals for articles for a special themed issue of
Nineteenth-Century Music Review on the topic of The Musical Sublime in the
Nineteenth Century.

This issue will explore the relationship between sublime aesthetics, in its
various formulations throughout the long nineteenth century, and the lives
and works of significant composers. An introductory essay will introduce
the conceptual history of music and the sublime up to the nineteenth
century. This will be followed by commissioned articles by scholars able to
make conceptual and contextual connections between particular composers,
musical works, musical genres, etc. with the diverse concepts associated
with the sublime in the nineteenth century.

This special issue seeks to open up new ways of understanding the
relationship of sublime aesthetics with the composers and musical culture
of the nineteenth century. It aims to explore the sublime with regard to
musical and biographical particulars, with attention to: (1) musical
biography, (2) musical representation, (3) historical accounts of music
composition and performance, and (4) reception history.
