PC or Mac? I can tell you what I’ve found for Mac.

Conferencing software.
I use a licensed version of Zoom. But there are other conferencing programs that can work well. Zoom offers a variety of views, including screen sharing, whiteboard, showing of videos, etc. Depending on whether you are using a licensed or free version, you can record presentations and post them for students. Recordings can be posted via Zoom (licensed version) or you can record to your computer then post wherever you wish - YouTube, Vimeo, etc. I use Zoom simply because that is what is used by my university.

Audio.
I find sound is much better if I use a mic. A USB mic does nicely for voice narration - I use a YETI Blue USB mic. I plug earphones directly into the mic and that helps me hear without any extraneous noise (when teaching from home, I have noisy parrots). Mac’s build-in mics are okay if you are doing voice-only. Higher quality mics are really only necessary for music, and for that, I use an audio mixer and 2 condenser mics. You can improve audio quality by tweaking settings in Zoom (to cut down on lag time, minimize background noise, etc.).

Video.
The simplest approach is to use your built-in camera. I would recommend that blinds be drawn if you have any windows behind you, as this tends to show a bright background with a dark foreground. You can also use an LED light to help light the speaker. Propping up the laptop so the camera is at eye-level gives a better view than looking up your nostrils.
I like to show different views, such as a close-up of my work at my table easel. You could take a number of approaches. If you have an iPhone, you can use your iPhone as a 2nd camera. I did try this and the image quality and color was very good, but it cut in and out, and sometimes took a couple of tries to connect initially. To use an iPhone, you’ll need an app, such as EpocCam. It costs, but not a lot (about $10, I think). There are a few other apps, but I don’t know them well enough to comment.
I tried a Logitech C920 camera and was not impressed. I ran it on a 10-year old Mac and the software that controls the camera is not compatible with older operating systems. So I might have had more control and better results on a newer Mac. Zoom does recognize the camera, so it can be used, but the image is not as crisp as I like and the color shift was substantial. So this camera might be fine as a web cam, but I don’t care for it for artwork.
I ended up with an IPEVO document camera (Thank you Marj Leggitt for providing info when I was looking into this). The software that comes with it is compatible back to High Sierra, so I have access to various features such as zooming, exposure, etc. The color and clarity are very good. Keep in mind this is a document camera, so it is intended that it be aimed downwards at an open book on a desk. I need to focus it on an angled table easel. So I detached the camera from the support and connected to an elbow support (the kind that generally supports a desk lamp) and attached a ball-joint tripod attachment with an iPhone mount. I secured it in place with elastic and I can rotate and position it as I need to. The software allows for picture-in-picture, so you can focus on your artwork and show a small image of you in the corner.
There are a variety of mounts for cameras. I need a lot of flexibility and need to be able to rotate and angle the camera as necessary. You may have to try several mounts to get exactly what works for you. In a pinch, you can use a microphone stand with a boom arm and a ball-joint tripod attachment. I’m sure you could use a boom arm on a camera tripod, and there are a number of camera mounts available.

This should give you a jumping off point. Please understand this is based on my own experience, so as the saying goes… your mileage may vary.

Best,
K

>> Yes, CBG has been doing this for some time, particularly for courses that use outdoor areas of the Garden: field sketching in the woods etc.. It seems to be working fine and is well received. On site classes are not recorded. You need to have a plan for meeting places for outdoor classes and for weather issues-- we are just having alternative rain dates.
>>
>> While the Garden is taking every precaution indoors, I'm still pretty paranoid and insisting on outdoor meeting places. I got a pair of Pentax Papilios binoculars (recommended by several people from this wonderful group) that focus very close: these are a great safe-distance teaching aid. They work so well I intend to keep using them permanently. My regular birding binocs claim 6' focusing but it's actually a bit farther away, which gives a poor angle on student work.

>> Patricia,
>> Hybrid courses are quite common, especially as schools are beginning to resume face-to-face classes. Because social distancing is still observed, which means fewer students in the classroom, class presentations can be done face-to-face and online, with appropriate hardware (cameras) and software (zoom or other conferencing software, some cameras also come with software for zooming, picture-in-picture, etc.). It takes some planning and please understand this takes more time for the instructor to prepare as they are preparing for two formats and trying to find a good middle ground. The class can be recorded and made available for students to review on their own time. If this is done, there should be a set amount of time the recordings are available, such when the class winds up, a week or two after or whatever is deemed best.
