Position Description
Brown University’s Department of Music seeks a full-time Director of Jazz Studies to be appointed at the level of Lecturer. We seek a Director with a vision for how jazz and improvisation can contribute to the education of students in the context of an inclusive liberal arts university and a diverse music department. The Director is responsible for running the big band or large ensemble, forming jazz combos through auditions, organizing combo concerts, coordinating the private instruction of jazz musicians, wind players and percussionists in the Applied Music Program, and teaching two courses per year in jazz history, arranging, improvisation, composition, or theory. The Director manages the ensemble’s budget, mounts two concerts per semester, arranges for guest artists to appear with the big band, coordinates combo concerts, vets admissions applications, and maintains alumni relations. As a full-time, voting faculty member, the Director attends departmental faculty meetings, participates in department administration, and serves as an undergraduate advisor.

The Brown University Department of Music is home to a number of performance ensembles including BU Orchestra, BU Chorus, Wind Symphony, World Music Ensemble, Electroacoustic Improvisation Ensemble, Old Time String Band, Javanese Gamelan, and Ghanaian Drumming and Dancing. The department has approximately 80 undergraduate concentrators at a given moment, and runs two Ph.D. programs, one in Musicology & Ethnomusicology, the other in Music & Multimedia Composition.

Qualified applicants will have an advanced degree (M.A., MM., M.F.A., D.M.A., Ph.D.) in Music or equivalent experience, and a record of accomplishments as a performer, composer, or arranger. Candidates with some teaching experience at a university, college, or conservatory and with conducting experience will be strongly preferred. A knowledge of traditional and contemporary jazz styles as well as improvisational practices is required. Applicants should explain in a cover letter what their creative and intellectual work will bring to Brown. A commitment to the goals of Brown’s diversity and inclusion action plan is essential. The initial appointment is for three years, and can be renewed following an evaluation based on the quality of teaching, service, and creative work or scholarship.

This position is scheduled to start July 2022; a January 2022 start date may be possible as well.
