Quentin Wheeler, who I believe is now retired-retired, provided the world with some real gems. This short document that he lead is inspirational and yet sad in that it is the only reference for the question "How many new species are described per year?". There is a need to develop an online near-real-time dashboard that includes this kind of information. I still need to put on all of my websites "Can we describe all the species on earth by 2050?", it was a wonderful call to action in the form of a question that Quentin and others proposed.
Sara Pennak at ASU confirmed that there are no updates to the document.

Well, Donat, that. Would be a circular comparison because it would compare ZR to ZR, and the correlation would be perfect. Ask better questions.

Donat, I don't understand. Zoological Record covers Arthropods and tries to monitor all journals (and probably fails, but to a lesser extent). Zoological Record is included in the list of databases considered.

Yes, that's' right. But they do not cover Arthropods and many journals that are not monitored by Zoo Record. Don't they count for the largest number of species?

Cheers

Donat

The table on page 1 on the source I gave in my last email gives precise numbers, not guesses. They derive from several databases including Zoological Record, that are listed on the second page (the page before p. 1) in that document:

* AlgaeBase *

* MycoBank *

* International Journal of*

Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology

* WoRMS I World Register of Marine Species*

* Thomson Reuters Zoological Record *

* International Plant Names Index *

* UniProt *

* Taxatoy *

These number might not be complete, but probably sufficiently complete to work with them.

Cheers

Not the total number of species discovered every year - we only guess and do not know, because we have no way of keeping track of what is even published.

However, Plazi liberates new species and many other taxa from ongoing publications and older literature, see https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://tb.plazi.org/GgServer/srsStats/stats?outputFields=bib.year*tax.status&groupingFields=bib.year&FP-tax.status=*22sp.*20nov.*22&format=HTML__;KyUlJQ!!PvXuogZ4sRB2p-tU!UVe6Fk4uJ5CxoC7TtZV_IEX2PkAAjqGvnbeUwa_hSs8OnRIHJB5O-jvS67qIzhtbcOTD$ <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https*3A*2F*2Furldefense.com*2Fv3*2F__https*3A*2F*2Fnam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com*2F*3Furl*3Dhttps*3A*2F*2Ftb.plazi.org*2FGgServer*2FsrsStats*2Fstats*3FoutputFields*3Dbib.year*2Btax.status*26groupingFields*3Dbib.year*26FP-tax.status*3D*2522sp.*2520nov.*2522*26format*3DHTML*26data*3D04*7C01*7C*7Cb83e6ad973494559f3c008d98e8671aa*7Cbe0003e8c6b9496883aeb34586974b76*7C0*7C0*7C637697530356391975*7CUnknown*7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0*3D*7C1000*26sdata*3DqI*2FFviUlRt*2BEgsTnYCXqVcHRZPRzIhpjhGN*2BNvsQU9M*3D*26reserved*3D0__*3BJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUl!!PvXuogZ4sRB2p-tU!W0pwMpaxj0hermjhdZK5guGFSLyBcUlSljqASjlITyXDclws4b-KSiZhv_9bX-_4bPv5*24&data=04*7C01*7Cmivie*40MONTANA.EDU*7Cc6fc3df6a30a42d8f7e108d98e87ebf2*7C324aa97a03a644fc91e43846fbced113*7C0*7C0*7C637697536723553485*7CUnknown*7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0*3D*7C3000&sdata=b5m*2B6kH6sY8vqIMPxTfkVXjbZrUbMGVgXwweg3YD*2FmU*3D&reserved=0__;JSUlJSUlJSUlJSUqKioqKioqKioqKioqKioqKiolJSoqKioqKioqKioqJSUqKioqJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJQ!!PvXuogZ4sRB2p-tU!WQEe-MaNxM7iPBWTapPW54LcB_wfhqv7wTtK1dH7AeFZVr6x4vT-LIEOxD1NkSuRy3gS$>

Subject: How many new species are described every year ?

Greetings friends,

This morning I hosted a group visit of the museum. As I was talking about biodiversity and new species we keep describing, one of them caught me with a very basic question: How many new species are described every year (on average)? I know we can browse through Zoological Record and its equivalent databases for plants and microorganisms, but has there been a published article answering and discussing this topic?
