I have run into this a few times, but they've always been able to eventually work around my lack of VAT eventually.  I realize this doesn't really answer your question, but I've had a few clients INSIST they cannot process payment without a VAT only to find a way when I explained repeatedly that I don't have one as a US vendor.  Just that you may push back again and see if there is REALLY no way they can find to process payment. Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone outside of the European Union has had experience registering for a VAT number? While I have been paid by several clients via university accounts in the EU previously, I have never been required to have a VAT number. Perhaps I should have as I now have a client in France who cannot process my payment without one. If anyone has done this, is there anything I should worry about or look out for? It seems I can register for one in any EU country and while I could probably make my way through the French system with my mediocre French, one suggestion I've seen online is to go through Ireland as everything is in English.
