I believe Venmo already charges a processing fee if you are a “Commercial” entity.  But they are not charging on “Personal” accounts where you are just passing money to people you know. But right now this seems to be some sort of honor system, not completely clear. It may be tied to your SSN or EIN for tax purposes.  I suppose this could change at any time…

I guess it depends where you live.

It seems like a lot of people here (New Jersey near NYC) have/use Venmo.

I don't know how fees work, since I used the numbers and Square from the bookstore where I work.

I was selling at the local native plant group's plant sale too!

Good luck.

I had the same question recently, but for a local native plant group (we had a plant sale recently) and for myself in the future. I was surprised to see they sell the Square units at Staples. And, I learned a little about them from one of the sales clerks. iPhone and Androids each use different card readers.

Also, I've been asking around about Venmo and I don't think the general public uses it. Most people seem to use PayPal. Venmo is actually owned by PayPal and someone told me in 2022 Venmo will start charging a processing fee (have not fact-checked this yet).

Hi Olivia

I just sold books at two outdoor weekend events in the last couple of months.

I borrowed a square from the bookstore where I work, and it was very simple.

But just as many people used Venmo or Paypal as they did their credit cards.

I was surprised!

Good luck!

Hi, all,

Things are still up in the air, but I may be selling prints/cards at a holiday art fair next month. I used to do these much more regularly, but it's been about 6 years, and card-reader technology has really changed since the time I used my little triangular PayPal reader attached to my phone.

I'm wondering if any of you have experience using various card readers (in phones or connected to iPads) to process sales, and if you have any advice.

Thanks so much,

Olivia Ambrogio
